Our Relationship to Nature is Who We Are

Nature is our 'ground zero' for symbol production.

From the dawn of consciousness, the vital information humanity integrated through living encounters and experiences of the natural world contributed to the symbol systems we now depend on for communication, thinking and problem-solving. The elements, light and dark, and the heavenly bodies would be obvious targets of the projections of our wonder in attempts to understand and organize experiences of the world around us. Then daily encounters with life surrounding human habitations would become another layer of meaningful symbolic sources. Animals, plants, weather, geography–all have contributed to the compendium of humanity’s symbol systems.
